Senj — porters, masons and mariners
Babić
Thirty-five readings from the Senj registers of 1748 to 1858, and the one episode that stands out of them: seven Babić children dead between 31 July and 29 August 1855, four of them sisters in three days.
Summer 1855
The Senj death register for 1855 records a run of Babić deaths. On 20 July a Babić porter, Joannes, died of dysentery, and the clerk wrote cholera beside it. Between 31 July and 29 August seven Babić children followed: Jacobus (4, a gardener's son) and Antonius (2, a porter's), both of spasms; Josepha (10, the porter Laurentius's daughter), of cholera; and four daughters of the porter Franciscus Babić, all of cholera — Maria (6) and Ursula (3) on 27 August, Francisca Romana (4) on 28 August, and another Maria (2½) on 29 August. All were buried at S. Vitus.
A caution. Two Marias of one father, aged six and two and a half, is either an unusual household or one child entered twice. The second entry itself mentions the first, which makes a double entry less likely and does not settle it. The two rows are kept apart until the page is read again.
Everyone of the name
All 46 people this archive holds of the name,
oldest first, in the shape the front page uses — the couple in two columns with a birthplace
beside each name, the children beneath them, brothers and sisters under whichever of the two
they belong to. Oldest first, which is the only order a family has, and
everything is shut until you open it. The rows marked parish register are people read
off a page that the family tree has never had; they are not less proved, they are just not
typed in.
2 of the 7 married couples here have
no child recorded under them.
That is worth saying rather than
hiding, because it is a fact about the family tree and not about the
family. A couple reaches this archive childless when they were
entered from one index hit and nobody went back for the baptisms — and the
children most often missing are the ones who died small, who are exactly the
children a register does record and an index does not.

VINCENTIUS BABIĆ, AGED 12 MONTHS [BORN ABOUT APRIL 1853], SON OF MARTHA BABIĆ, DIED OF MEASLES AT SENJ ON 16 APRIL 1854, BURIED AT S. VITUS — an entry of the Latin-language 1854 pages of the Senj death register (Knjiga Mertvih, Br. 1118); only the mother is named.
(1) Senj marriages (Vjenčani) 1734–1819, 1820–1858 and deaths 1820–1858 (FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P, 592 images), image 561, right-hand page, 1854 April, sixteenth day, on 561R: «Die 16. obiit Vincentius filius Marthae Babić e morbillis mensium 12, sepultusque est in coemeterio S. Viti comitante Antonio Lukovich coop.» The Latin-language 1854 pages of the Senj death register (the book «Knjiga Mertvih od God. 1849», Državni arhiv Zagreb, Zbirka matičnih knjiga Br. 1118; the form «Die [day]. obiit [name] e [cause] annorum N, provisa sacramentis morientium, sepultaque est in coemeterio S. Viti comitante Antonio Lukovich cooperatore»), image 561 right page (page 33). Read at full page scale (about 1x; the child's name, the mother's genitive «Marthae Babić» and the age 12 months legible). An infant born about April 1853 whose mother is Martha Babić — only the mother is named, so he may be illegitimate (the register would have written «illegitimus» had it said so; it did not); the Vincentius Babić, aged 41, who died on 5 May 1853 (image 556R), is a possible father only as a reading (snapshotted; read at about 6x). Read at a band of the half-page cropped to the lines, at page scale (about 1x; «Georgius Babić», «marasmo senili annorum 78» and «Antonio Lukovich» legible; the words between the name and the regiment are a looped hand and are not read with certainty, and the month has a correction above it). A man born about 1777; if he served as a veteran of a border regiment (Grenzer regiment No. 2 was the Otočac or Lika regiment) the register records it, the age is the one fact that is certain (snapshotted; read at about 6x).
