The Australian Žubrinići, from about 1884

Port Pirie

One man left Senj for a lead-smelting town on the far side of the world, and his name changed on arrival. Twenty of his descendants are in this tree, and every one of them is a Zubrinich.

The first of them is Joannes / Juan / Ivan / Ive / John Žubrinić — a man carried in this tree under five versions of one given name — born 1860 and died 1930 at Port Pirie, South Australia. His eldest recorded child is born there in 1885, which puts his arrival at about 1884.

From that child onward the surname in the register is Zubrinich. Not once does it revert. The names →

Why Port Pirie

Port Pirie is not a random landfall. Smelting began there in 1889, and it grew into one of the largest lead smelters in the world — heavy, dangerous, continuous work that paid, and that hired men without English. Croatians began arriving in South Australia from the Dalmatian islands in the 1890s, and many of them went to Port Pirie and Broken Hill. Further groups came with the economic depression in Dalmatia and Međimurje between 1910 and 1913, and again after the political unrest of 1922.

The family's later moves confirm the pattern exactly: this tree records Zubrinich deaths at Broken Hill and Whyalla — the silver-lead mine and the steelworks. They followed the metal.

An anomaly worth flagging. Ivan's birthplace is entered as “Senj, Split-Dalmatia, Croatia”. Senj is in Lika-Senj county, not Split-Dalmatia; this is an automated place-match error, and it matters because it is the kind of thing that later gets read as evidence of Dalmatian origin. Open questions →

The Australian records in this tree

24 people with an Australian birth or death place. The infant deaths — Robert Emmett in 1888, Susannah in 1889, Stanley in 1897 — are the ordinary arithmetic of a smelter town.

Read the first three together. A man lands about 1884 with nothing; by 1893 he holds a working man's block; by 1897 the district council describes a stretch of road by his name; and in 1900 he is in the dock because a child of his has had sandy blight — trachoma, the eye disease of dust and flies — for eighteen months, and a daughter speaks for the family in court. By 1911 he is a pioneer at a reunion dinner, and by 1922 an L. J. Zubrinich is signing the football and cricket socials at Waverley Hall in Broken Hill as honorary secretary. Not one of those facts was in this archive the day before.
And a fourth spelling turns out not to exist. This archive has made much of three alphabets — Xubrinich in the Venetian convention, Zubrinich in the German-Latin hand, Žubrinić in modern Croatian — and Trove offers two more, Xubrinich (2 of these articles) and Zubrinick (2). They are the scanner, not the family. Every one is Port Pirie or Crystal Brook between 1922 and 1926, and a single paragraph of The Register for 13 October 1925 carries «Mrs. M. ZubrinIck» and «Mrs. Zubrlnich» three words apart. An X in a twentieth-century Australian newspaper is OCR; an X in the 1834 Otočac register is orthography. The two must not be counted together, and this page had been one sweep away from doing it.
How it was done, and what the numbers mean. The Trove API enumerates — one request returns every candidate across a continent and a century with its date, paper, page and a direct link — and with this key it returns no article text at all. The OCR has to come from the free public page. Both halves are needed and neither does the other's job. And the search is fuzzy, so the total is not a finding. Trove reports 9,263 hits for Zubrinich, 8,790 of them in South Australia and 311 in New South Wales, and the national list opens with an 1888 Sydney advertising column and an 1893 pony-race card that contain no such name. But the top of each list is good. Oldest-first and fetching each page: 36 of the first 40 in South Australia and 23 of the first 24 in New South Wales really do contain the string. So the table above is a data file of articles whose text was read, the page counts its rows, and the big number is kept in the search register where it is context and not a finding.

Family Notices, which is a different kind of evidence entirely

Everything above is social — a boxing card, a football team-sheet, a council minute. Trove carries a separate, narrower category, Family Notices — births, deaths, marriages, engagements, in memoriam. Run against it alone: 231 hits, and 50 of the first 50 fetched genuinely contain the name — a hit rate the general search never comes close to, because a family notice says a surname once and means it.

And this category does something the boxing card cannot: it names people this archive's own tree does not have, married to people it already does.

WhenWhoWhat it gives
23 May 1919 Leonard John Zubrinich Son of Michael Valentine Zubrinić (1899–1985) — an infant this tree does not have. Died at five weeks, at his grandparents' house in Pirie West.
by 1919 – 9 Dec 1932 Minnie Doris Michael Valentine's wife, who this tree has never carried. Died at Solomontown aged 35 — thirteen years after they lost their infant son together.
26 May 1928 Irene Dorothy Patten Married John Stephen Zubrinich (1907–1999) at the Whyalla Methodist Church — a wife this tree has never carried either.
23 May 1936 Asta Louise Hudson Married Leonard Francis Zubrinich (1908–1981) at Holy Trinity, Adelaide. Their son Daryl Francis was born 10 June 1939 — the marriage confirmed by its own child, three years on.
Three men this tree has carried for years, with full lives and exact dates — and no wives. Michael Valentine, John Stephen and Leonard Francis Zubrinić all have a MyHeritage-sourced birth and death and, until this sweep, no spouse recorded at all. Family Notices is not corroborating what the tree already says here; it is the only record of three marriages the tree never had. And it corroborates where the tree already speaks, to the day: Kate Zubrinić's death — 23 January 1927, Quorn, exactly as this tree already has it — is named in an In Memoriam a year later as «accidentally killed», a manner of death no tree field carries. And John Žubrinić's death — 15 December 1930, Port Pirie — matches the tree to the day as well, independently.

And Family Notices for Broken Hill gave a fourth man a whole family

New South Wales was never queried at the Family Notices level, only the general search. Run: 29 hits, 28 of 29 fetched genuinely contain the name, all of them Broken Hill.

Leonard James Zubrinić (1894–1985) — the WWI Staff-Sergeant Farrier this archive found in its first sweep — is in this tree with a birth at Port Pirie, a death at Broken Hill, and nothing in between. Family Notices, read across thirty-two years and three addresses, gives the whole of it.

WhenWhoWhat it gives
by 1922 Eva Uhe His wife, named across three decades of notices — «Eva and Len Zubrinich» by the 1950s. Her mother, Frances Eveline Uhe, died in 1944 at the family's own address, 724 Lane Street.
m. 1943 Elaine May Zubrinich Eldest daughter. Engaged Christmas 1942 to Cpl. Alfred Verdun Paynter; he was dead by 1951, mourned in an In Memoriam that names her parents.
m. 15 Jun 1946 Shirley Zubrinich Second daughter. Married John Reed at the Oxide Street Methodist Church — the notice spells her father's name a third way, «Lin», beside «L.», «L.J.» and «Len» across the rest of the run.
m. by Mar 1948 Irene Dawn Zubrinich Youngest daughter, called «Dawn». Married Edward John McAvaney; their son John Rex McAvaney, born 21 July 1949, confirms it.
And one lead, now much stronger, still not proved. A 1917 In Memoriam for a Stephen Murphy of Broken Hill names his mourning family, among them «Kate and Jack Zubrinich» — his daughter Kate, married to a Jack Zubrinich. Two more notices put the same couple there: on 27 June 1914 «K. and J. Zubrinich» are named beside «Mrs. Alice Murphy» and «M. and J. Buss» among the friends at a funeral, and on 16 July 1921 the funeral notice of Alice Murphy, relict of Stephen Murphy, is given by her children and their wives and husbands, among them «Mr. and Mrs. J. Zubrinich» (the same notice set again on page 1 reads «T.»; «J.» agrees with 1914 and 1917). So a J. Zubrinich was married to a Murphy daughter called Kate, at Broken Hill, from at least 1914 to 1921. John William Zubrinich (1885–1953) is in this tree married to Catherine Lucy Murphy (born 8 October 1885), said by the tree to have married him on 5 December 1906 at St Mark's, Port Pirie; the Port Pirie death notice of 1953 names his wife as Catherine; and his eldest son is John Stephen (born 1907) — a Stephen, like her presumed father. The other John in this family then, John William's own father, died in 1930 leaving a widow named Rose, not Kate. Probable; not proved. No notice says «John William», none says Port Pirie, and nothing yet names Catherine's parents. The document that would is the 1906 marriage entry itself.

How this branch joins the family

Not yet proved. Ivan Žubrinić of Port Pirie is in the tree, and he is of the right name, the right town and the right generation to be close kin of Tereza Žubrinić (1867–1931), Hedviga's grandmother. But the document that joins them — a shared father in the Otočac or Senj baptismal register — has not been produced here. Given how rare the name is (about 312 bearers on earth), the relationship is very likely. “Very likely” is not “shown”.

And they did not only go to Australia

This page exists because the family knew about Port Pirie. Searching the unanglicised spelling — Zubrinic rather than Zubrinich — turns up a second, entirely separate emigration: to Youngstown, Johnstown and Brooklyn, and a Kalanj emigration to the mining towns of Colorado, Michigan and Illinois.

Nobody in this family knew about any of it, and the records were never scarce — they were simply never looked for, because one spelling was searched and the other was not. The other emigration →

Nor only to South Australia

Every one of the 24 Australians above is in South Australia or, later, at Broken Hill. That is the whole Australian story this archive has told. Queensland's own historical index was searched for the first time on 13 September 2026, and it holds one Zubrinich.

Stanley Joseph Zubrinich married Joanna Marian Josephine Clowes in Queensland on 15 November 1947 — registration 1947/B/15067. He is not in this tree, and no Stanley Joseph is.

A candidate, not a relative. Nothing here shows how he joins. But two things make him worth the next hour somebody spends. The surname is vanishingly rare, and the anglicised -ich ending is the specific spelling this family adopted on arrival at Port Pirie and never once reverted from — so a Zubrinich in Australia is far more likely to be one of these than to be a separate landing. And the given name is the family's: a Stanley was born at Port Pirie in 1896 and died there in 1897, and these are people who re-used the names of children they lost. A Stanley Joseph marrying in 1947 would have been born around the 1920s, which is exactly the generation of Terrence Joseph (1924) and Maurice William (1922). His marriage certificate would name his parents and settle it.

The nulls are worth recording with it. Queensland's register covers births to 1926, marriages to 1951 and deaths to 1996, and across that span it holds no Zubrinic, no Blazevic and no Subrinich. The three Blazevich entries are a Queensland household of Thomas Bogin Blazevich, who married Jane Chambers in 1940, and are unconnected to anyone here.

The graves, and who lies in them together

This archive had never used a cemetery index. Find a Grave holds 72 Zubrinich memorials and not one of them is in Croatia — twenty-nine at Port Pirie, thirteen at Enfield in Adelaide, six at Timmins in Ontario, four at Whyalla, two at Broken Hill, two in Pennsylvania, one in California. The whole of this surname's recorded burial is emigration.

Sixteen of the 72 are people on this site. The other 56 are not, and the plot numbers say who they were: a lot number is a household claim, and it is one a parish register cannot make.

Rose has dates. John Zubrinich lies in CC, Lot 26 at Port Pirie, and beside him in grave 2 is Rose Zubrinich, 17 March 1860 – 24 September 1949 — the Rose Gormley he married at St Luke's in 1884, who until today had no dates in this archive at all and was born within a fortnight of her husband. In his own grave, number 1, are two of their children — Susannah, and Stanley who died at six months.

Six dates disagree, and five of them are not disagreements

Where a memorial matches somebody here, the dates were compared rather than merged. Five of the six differences run the same way — Find a Grave one, two or ten days later than the tree, never earlier. That is not a conflict. It is the burial. A cemetery records the interment, a parish records the death, and the gap between them is the funeral.

The sixth is real. Leonard James died on 25 March — both sources agree to the day — but the tree says 1985 and the Broken Hill cemetery says 1983. Same day, same month, two years apart, which is the shape of a typed digit rather than a misremembered date. This archive does not know which is right. His headstone would settle it, and Find a Grave has a photograph of it.

And one name closes a question this page opened. Find a Grave records Stanley J Zubrinich, a veteran, died 8 July 2001, at the South Australian Garden of Remembrance — which is very likely the Stanley Joseph Zubrinich who married in Queensland in 1947 above, and puts him back in South Australia at the end. Still a candidate, not a relative: nothing yet names his parents.
