Kalanj
This archive looked for them at Klenovica for a fortnight. Their own baptismal entry calls them country people of the parish of Brinje, forty kilometres inland — and not one page of that register has been opened.
They are not a Klenovica family. They are Brinje people.
This archive spent a fortnight treating the Kalanji as a Klenovica family. 119 of them are recorded there, eighty-five carry a Klenovica or Povile house number, and every search this archive has run has been on that coast. Their own baptismal entry says otherwise, and it took an American passenger manifest to make anyone read the line properly.
Klenovica N° 22, 3 January 1864 — the baptism of Ana Kalanj
Josephus Kalanj et Rosalia nata Perković ejus uxor, Brinjensis parochiae ruricolae
— country people of the parish of Brinje.
Brinje is inland, over the Kapela, some forty kilometres from the sea. And the tree independently records Rozalija Perković as being of Brinje. So the Klenovica Kalanji came down to the coast, and this page is written the wrong way round: everything below is what the family looked like after they arrived.
And three of our surnames meet at Brinje
The emigration records closed the triangle, and they are the reason the Latin line was read again at all. Stipe Kalanj, born 1885, sailed for New York in 1910 on La Bretagne, gave his residence as Brinje, left a wife Kate behind, and was met at the dock by his cousin, Juro Borić.
This tree holds a Jure Borić of Brinje — whose daughter Ana Borić, born 12 February 1885 at Brinje, married Frane Papić of Senj, born 27 July 1873. Papić is Hedviga's mother's family.
Kalanj, Perković and Borić are all at Brinje, and a Borić of Brinje married a Papić of Senj. That is not proof they are one kin-group and it is not offered as one. It is the observation that the parish where three of this archive's nine surnames overlap is the one parish nobody has ever looked in.
What the coast records do show: one house under two names
Once they are on the coast the Kalanji are the best-placed family in this archive — 87% of their records name a place — and the places resolve into far fewer houses than they first appear to.
Eighty-five published Kalanji carry a Klenovica or Povile house number, and every one of those houses is entirely Kalanj — not one is shared with another surname. The two largest looked separate and are not. Petrus Kalanj and Magdalena Butković's ten children are entered Povile 22, Klenovica 22, Klenovica 22, Povile 22, then four at Klenovica 22, then two more at Povile 22. Ivan and Josipa alternate the same way across seven children; Luka and Kata across four.
No household moves house nine times and alternates back. Povile and Klenovica are neighbouring settlements and the registers used the two names for one place. So house 22 holds 67 published people between 1840 and 1890 — the largest single household in the archive, ahead of Smokvica 114 and Krivi Put 136. The gazetteer →
And the smaller numbers are zadrugas too
If house 22 is the extended household, the small late numbers ought to be sons splitting off. Two of them are not. Klenovica 23 (1862–1893) holds the children of four different couples — Mate and Catharina Pa…, Josephus and Catharina Buneta, Jandre and Manda Komadina, Joso and Manda Komadina. Klenovica 36 (1892–1894) holds the children of three — Luka and Kata Miletić, Joso and Manda, Franjo and Tereza.
That is the same signature this archive identified at Smokvica 114: several married couples entered against one number in the same years. So the zadruga is not a Smokvica peculiarity or a Bunjevac one — it is how Klenovica was organised too, and a family that had just come down from Brinje kept it. Houses 37, 38 and 59 hold a single child each and are something else, probably transient.
One puzzle sits inside it
Luka Kalanj and Kata Miletić have children at house 22, then at 36 in 1892, then at 37 in 1894 — and two of them are called Marija. Whether that is a family moving twice in two years, a renumbering, or two entries for one child is not answerable from this file.
Four boys called Antonius
Petrus and Magdalena's children include an Antonius born in 1865, another in 1868, a third in 1868 and a fourth in 1872. That is not an error. It is a necronym — a dead child's name given to the next born — and it is why the duplicate check has to read two death years as proof of two people rather than as evidence of one.
How they reach Hedviga
Not, as this page used to say, by marrying into the Blažević line — that is one marriage, Lovro Kalanj and Klara Blažević. The chain that actually carries the family runs through Hedviga's husband.
Ana Kalanj, born at Klenovica N° 22 on 3 January 1864 and baptised three days later — the same entry that says Brinje — married Josip de Franceschi; their son Ante, their grandson Pepe. Every published Kalanj is connected to Hedviga by ordinary links: 100%, which only one other family here can say. What that means →
Four siblings, found loose in a photo library
The baptisms of Ana (1894), Franciska (1896), Zora (1898) and Ivan (1900) — four consecutive children of Martin Kalanj and Marija Peričić at Novi Vinodolski — were sitting unattached in the family's own photographs. All four match the tree to the day, and the register calls the father Martin Kalanj Josipov, a patronymic that confirms the grandfather independently of the tree.
Zora's godparents in 1898 are entered Josip i Ana Defrancesco — the child's aunt and uncle, which is how Ana's own place in this family was confirmed from a direction nobody was looking in.
A death this page was too credulous about
Corrected the same day it was published
This page said, for most of a day, that Martin Kalanj died at Trebinje on 5 August 1900 — in Herzegovina, four hundred kilometres from home, seven months after his youngest child was baptised at Novi Vinodolski — and that nothing here explained it. That was too credulous.
His birth carries a full citation: FamilySearch 3QSQ-G99X-KW8J, image 17 of 342, Hrvatski državni arhiv image group 005494765. His death carries none — the source is a family tree, and the place is the bare word Trebinje with no country attached.
And this tree moves Lika villages into Bosnia. Michael «Mate» Žubrinić, born 1863 at Prozor near Otočac, is geocoded in the same export to Prozor in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton — two hundred kilometres away, across a border, and the fourth geocoding error recorded here.
So the question is no longer why he went to Herzegovina. It is whether he ever did — and a death register at Novi Vinodolski or Klenovica would answer it faster than any search in Trebinje.
Brinje, opened at last — and a Kalanj was there the whole time
Asked for directly on 29 September 2026. DGS 005498262, Brinje's own Vjenčani (marriages) volume, read from its first page for the first time since this row was opened on 15 September. Image 530 holds two entries facing each other, and both bear on the questions below.
Brinje, 16 [month illegible] 1890 — entry no. 13
KALANJ NIKO, bachelor, 40, of Brinje house 231, son of KALANJ JURO and ANA, marries a widow recorded as Marija, 33, of Brinje house 198. Witnesses Zoričić Stjepan and Rimenović Tomo.
Niko Kalanj, born about 1850, and his father Juro Kalanj are the first Kalanj men this archive has found actually resident at Brinje itself — not a coast family remembered as being «of» the parish on the strength of one Latin phrase, but a household in it, at a numbered house, a generation before anyone here can otherwise reach. Neither is in the tree; both are recorded at /found/niko-kalanj/. That marriage is now a confirmed household: ANICA KALANJ, daughter of this same Niko Kalanj and a mother named Marija Vučetić, was born at the same Brinje house 231 on 21 August 1893 — the mother's maiden name fits cleanly, with none of the contradictions the Borić puzzles below carry (/found/anica-kalanj/). A second child followed three years later: a son, also named NIKO after his own father, born 26 July 1896 - the same two parents, the same clean line, no discrepancy anywhere in either reading.
The facing page, same image — entry no. 13
BORIĆ ___, recorded here as «Vid» though the given name resists a confident reading, widower(?), 25, of Kamenica (a hamlet of Brinje parish) house 17, son of BORIĆ LUKA, marries a woman recorded as (Š)orić Kate, 20, of Brinje house 127. A second witness on the same entry is BORIĆ JOZO.
Three Borić men, independent of the emigration papers that first named one. This page has said since it was written that a Jure Borić of Brinje gave away his daughter to a Papić of Senj — sourced from a 1910 passenger manifest, not from any Croatian register. This is the first confirmation from the parish's own book that Borić is a real, resident Kamenica surname, with Luka, this groom, and Jozo all attested in 1890. Whether any of the three is kin to the Jure Borić already on this page is not established — recorded at /found/vid-boric/.
/found/ page. The first Rođeni (births) item is now finished too — it turned out to be catalogued 1888–1892, a shorter and separate item from the marriage book rather than one long 492-image volume as first assumed. It added four more Borić and two Kalanj women to the tally — including a second Borić-marries-Borić household, at Brinje house 191, distinct from the one this book's marriages already showed at house 141 — and a likely third child at that very house. A second Rođeni item, 1893–1897, is open now on the same film. The work list →That second item, read to image 218 of its own pages so far, has already answered one question this page asked and opened two more. VIOL KALANJ, of Brinje, married to Kate Zoričić since a birth in 1890, now has a second child on record: FRANJO KALANJ, born 10 August 1893 — proof this is a real, continuing household and not a single register entry, at /found/franjo-kalanj/. The house number given for Franjo, 189, does not match the 118 recorded for his sister three years earlier; not explained.
Two more open puzzles, both about whether a household already on this page has grown a second name for itself. At Kamenica house 24 — already the address of a Niko Borić whose daughter Marija married out in 1897 — a second daughter, KATE BORIĆ, was born in February 1893, but her mother is recorded as Radotić Dace, not the Bare named for Marija (/found/kate-boric/); and then a third birth at the very same house, LUCE BORIĆ, born October 1893 to a father entered as Tome, not Niko, and a mother Marija Radotić, not Dace (/found/luce-boric-daughter-of-tome-boric/). Three children at one house number, two fathers' names, two mothers' names: a second wife, an alternate name, a scribal slip, or genuinely more than one Borić household sharing the number — none of it established. At Brinje house 126 — already the house of Ivan Borić's children Juko and Luce — a son, STJEPAN BORIĆ, was born in August 1893 to a father named Grgo, not Ivan (/found/stjepan-boric-son-of-grgo-boric/). Both read as written, not merged into the household already known. That Grgo Borić household is now confirmed rather than a single register line: a second child, ANA BORIĆ, was born to the same Grgo Borić and Marija Milaković at the same house on Christmas Day 1894 (/found/ana-boric-daughter-of-grgo-boric/) — a real, continuing family, though whether Grgo and Ivan/Ive are the same man is still not established.
And one puzzle this page has carried since the marriage book was read is now a birth, not just a marriage entry. That book records a MARIJA BORIĆ, spinster, 19, of Brinje house 142, daughter of Niko Borić, marrying HOFJENC NIKO around 1892–93. A son, also named NIKO, was born to a Niko Hofjenc and Marija Borić on 11 October 1893 — almost exactly the timeline that marriage implies, and the first direct proof it actually took place and produced a family, not only a register line (/found/niko-hofjenc-son-of-niko-hofjenc-and-marija-boric/). One thing left unexplained: a witness on the same entry is entered under the mother's own name, Borić Marija.
Images 230 to 239, the most recent stretch, add a third address to the Kamenica puzzle and a plausible face for the Grgo Borić named above. A Hormanć household now also sits at Kamenica house 24, alongside the Borić and Sertić households already recorded there — a third surname sharing one number, favouring the shared-address reading over one confused family, though still not proof either way. And a GRGO BORIĆ stood witness at a Kamenica baptism the same year as Stjepan's birth above — the same given name, same parish, four months after the father named for Stjepan, but no document names them as one man; kept as a plausible, unconfirmed match, not a merge.
And the register turned over into 1894 to add a fourth child to the one household on this page with no puzzle left in it. BORIĆ OVE, born 10 January 1894 at Brinje house 141, daughter of BORIĆ TOME and BORIĆ JELE — a fourth child, joining JURAJ (1888), PETAR (1890) and MATIJA (1892), and the first of the four with no discrepancy in the mother's name to puzzle over. Four children, one house, one clean line: still the steadiest Borić household this page has found — until March 1895, when the same house number produced BORIĆ MARICA, daughter of BORIĆ IVE and BORIĆ MATIJA, not Tome and Jela. The 1892 birth already carried an uncertain reading of the mother's name as Matija; whether this is a second Borić-marries-Borić household sharing house 141, or the same misreading recurring, is not established.
A fifth Kamenica house number for the surname, and a witness whose own name resists a confident reading. BORIĆ LUCE, born 6 February 1894 at Kamenica house 83, daughter of BORIĆ LOJZE and Mesić Manda-Marija — a new Borić given name at a new address, kept apart from the already-puzzling house 24 and from the three other women named Luce Borić already on this page. That exact mother's name resurfaced four months later at a different Kamenica house: BORIĆ TOME, born June 1895 at house 23, son of BORIĆ TOME and the same Mesić Manda-Marija — a different father's name and a different house number, so not merged, but the coincidence is flagged rather than ignored. Lojze himself may have resurfaced under his full name: BORIĆ ALOJZ stood witness to a Škorup baptism at Brinje, alongside the same Škorup surname his own household's witnesses carried at Luce's baptism — a stronger coincidence than most of this page's unconfirmed links, though still not a named match. A new given name reached Kamenica in August 1895, when BORIĆ STJEPAN stood witness to a Sertić baptism there. A ninth BORIĆ MARIJA stood witness at another Kamenica baptism the same year, kept apart from all the others of that name already here. And a Borić man witnessed a second Milaković baptism — the same pairing this page already noted once, a Borić standing up for a Milaković child, though nothing ties the two sightings to one man. A third sighting followed, at the very same house. BORIĆ GRGO stood witness to a Milaković baptism at Brinje house 74 in April 1897 — the identical house where he first appeared in this file in 1893, paired again with a woman named Marica. The strongest recurring pattern this page has found, though still short of a confirmed identity. A new given name, BORIĆ VIOL, survives only as a witness line at the very top of a page whose own entry was never fully photographed. Another new given name, BORIĆ ROZA, stood witness at a Brinje baptism the same September. And a third Jozo/Joso Borić turned up witnessing a Škorup baptism — the same surname already tied to the plausible Alojz Borić sighting above, though this one is kept separate.
And BORIĆ TRICA stood witness at a Brinje baptism in April 1894 — a given name this page is not confident it has read correctly, and nothing more than a witness line to go on.
And, at the very edge of this month's reading, a name that may close the loop this page opened first. BORIĆ VID stood witness to a baptism at Brinje house 132 on 30 May 1894 — a plausible, unconfirmed match for the first Borić this page ever named, back in the 1890 marriage book (son of Luka Borić, Kamenica house 17), though that earlier reading of his own name was itself never a confident one. And a sixth woman named BORIĆ MARIJA married out of the surname, this time into Krnarić — kept apart from the five others of the same name already here, since nothing ties any of them together beyond the name itself.
A second unmarried Borić mother, at a Kamenica house number this page has not seen before. KATE BORIĆ, of Kamenica house 3, had a daughter in July 1894 who was entered under her mother's own surname, OVE BORIĆ — the father's column left blank, the same pattern this page already carries once, at a different Kamenica house, for Luce Borić and her son Marko in 1891. The two women are kept apart; the pattern itself is now the only thing they share. The same baptism names a witness, a seventh BORIĆ MARIJA in this file — possibly a relative standing up for the child, though nothing says so. And a fifth woman named BORIĆ LUCE married out of the surname, into Bišanić — an eighth Borić woman married out of this parish's most persistently exported name. That marriage is now a confirmed household too: a second son, IVAN, was born to the same Marko Bišanić and Luce Borić at the same house 174 two years later, in September 1896.
A third Niko Borić household, at a house number this page has not carried before. BORIĆ MARKO was born 19 September 1894 at Brinje house 148, son of BORIĆ NIKO and Boletić Marija — a different Niko Borić from both the one who married in 1890 at house 142 and the one already on this page as father of Marija, Kate and Luce at Kamenica house 24. Three men, three houses, one given name: the same shape this page keeps finding.
And a plausible return, three years on. BORIĆ MANOLE — already on this page as a mother at Kamenica house 24 by 1891 — stood witness to a Kamenica baptism in September 1894, probably the same woman, though nothing names her as such. The register then turned into 1895, and a first Borić name reached Lučane: BORIĆ IVAN stood witness there on 27 December 1894, the same hamlet a Borić woman had already married into in 1893.
An eighth Marija Borić married out, into the same family a Marija Borić had already married into once before. BORIĆ MARIJA became the wife of Vid Hofjevac, at Brinje house 160 — a different husband and a different spelling of the name (Hofjevac, not Hofjenc), but the same family this page's very first Marija Borić married into at house 142. A witness on the same entry, BORIĆ MANULE, may or may not be the Manole Borić already followed at Kamenica; this entry places her at Brinje itself.
And, for the first time in this register, a Perković woman — the surname this whole search began by chasing, alongside Kalanj and Borić. PERKOVIĆ KATE became the mother of Hofjevac Luka at Brinje house 148 in August 1896, married into the very same Hofjenc/Hofjevac family that has already taken in several Borić brides. A fourth BORIĆ KATE married into Domić at Lučane the following month, kept apart from the three others of that name already here. And the Sertić household at Kamenica house 13 is now confirmed too: a second son, NIKO, was born to the same Jure Sertić and Tauka Borić in November 1896, three and a half years after their first. The register then turned into 1897, and the Krnarić-Borić household this page found first in 1894 grew too: a second child, TOME, born to Jure Krnarić and Marija Borić on 18 March 1897, this time with a house number (208) the first entry never gave.
That third item is now confirmed to be exactly that — the same register continuing past 1897 with no fresh title card of its own, entry numbers running straight on from where item two left off. A new BORIĆ NIKO stood witness to a Blažanin baptism at Brinje house 154 in December 1897, kept separate from the Niko Borić already on this page.
And the register turned into calendar year 1898, adding a probable third child to the very first Niko Borić household this page named. BORIĆ MARICA was born 23 July 1898 at Brinje house 142, daughter of BORIĆ NIKO and a mother's maiden name entered as Bojenić — a third spelling for that same wife, after Bašić in the 1890 marriage record and Bošnjić for their first child Viol in 1891. Close enough in sound that all three may be one woman under three scribal hands, though this page does not merge them on sound alone. A witness on the same entry, BORIĆ TOME, is kept separate from the two other Tome Borić men already here — one a lone witness at house 101 in 1893, the other heading his own household at Kamenica house 23.
A second Sertić-Borić couple, at a Kamenica house number the surname has not carried before. SERTIĆ NIKO was born 10 October 1898 at Kamenica house 28, son of Sertić Jure and BORIĆ FRANCE — kept apart from the Sertić Jure and Tauka Borić already confirmed on this page at Kamenica house 13, since the house number and the wife's given name both differ, though both husbands share the name Jure. A witness on the same entry, BORIĆ VUJO, is a new given name for the surname. Two more names brushed past without being pulled in: a mother recorded as BORIĆEVIĆ MARIJA, a different surname sharing only the root, watched rather than counted; and a second JURE KRNARIĆ, married to Draženović Ova at Brinje house 24, kept separate from the Krnarić-Borić household already on this page at house 208.
And the register turned into 1899, confirming a name this page had only ever named in passing. BORIĆ MANOLE was born 3 January 1899 at Kamenica house 23, daughter of BORIĆ ALOJZ and Mesić Manola — the same house number already holding Tome Borić (born 1895, son of Borić Tome and Mesić Manda-Marija), and the same wife's surname, Mesić, for a second time at that address. Alojz Borić himself was on this page only as a single witness sighting, tentatively linked to Lojze Borić of Kamenica house 83 (also married to a Mesić woman); this baptism proves he is a real household head, though it does not say whether he is Tome, Lojze, both, or neither. Three Borić men, two houses, one recurring wife's surname — still not merged.
A new Kalanj name, at the very house this whole page began with. KALANJ RUŽE was born 5 January 1899 at Brinje house 231, daughter of Kalanj Jure and Vučetić Manole — the same house already carrying Niko Kalanj's household (married 1890, son of Kalanj Juro and Ana). Corrected on re-reading at full zoom: the mother's surname was first entered here as Vukelić; it is Vučetić, the same surname as Niko's own wife, Marija Vučetić. Jure is a variant of Juro, so this is probably the same family, but she is kept as a separate entry, not folded into it.
Reading resumed, and the right-hand page of that same spread had been skipped. On image 450 itself, BORIĆ LUCE was born 19 January 1899 at Brinje house 141, daughter of Borić Tome and Borić Jela — a fifth child for the Borić-marries-Borić household (Juraj 1888, Petar 1890, Matija 1892, Ove 1894), with a BORIĆ NIKO as witness. On the next image, KALANJ FRANC was born 28 January 1899 at house 231 again, son of Kalanj Mile and Vučetić Marija. Two Kalanj births at the same house within four weeks, both to Vučetić mothers, cannot be one child: either Niko's household is being entered under shifting first names, or two Kalanj brothers shared the house and married into the same Vučetić family. Neither is established, and neither entry is merged into Niko's.
Two households this page already knew each gained a third child in March 1899. KRNARIĆ MIJO was born 20 March at Brinje house 208, son of Jure Krnarić and Borić Marija — after Manda (1894) and Tome (1897), at the same house; the second Krnarić household entered at house 208 in November 1898 now looks like a second family sharing the address, not a rival reading of this one. And KALANJ MARIJA was born 13 March at Brinje house 188, a third child for Viol Kalanj and Kate Zoričić (Kate 1890, Franjo 1893): the house number now reads 118, 189 and 188 across the three births, which looks like a habit of the register, not three addresses. A witness on one entry reads Perhović, the near-miss, not Perković.
August 1899 is the densest run of Borić names this page has met since 1895, and it points the same way as everything before it: Sertić. BORIĆ MARIJA's second child with Hofjevac Viol (Vid, in the 1895 entry) was born 9 August at house 160 — the same woman, not a ninth. Two days earlier, SERTIĆ TOMO was born at house 128 to Sertić Petar and BORIĆ KATE, with a BORIĆ JELA as witness; and six days later SERTIĆ RUŽE was born at the neighbouring house 127 to Sertić Marko and BORIĆ KATE. Two husbands, two houses, one mother's name and surname inside a week: two women both called Kate Borić who married into Sertić, or one woman and a clerk's slip. Not resolved. At Kamenica, BORIĆ LOJZE stood witness to a Sertić baptism at house 5, and on 18 August BORIĆ JOSO was born at Kamenica house 23 to BORIĆ STIPE and Sertić Luce — so that one house number now holds three Borić fathers (Tome, Alojz and Stipe), with three different wives (Mesić, Mesić, Sertić), the same shape this page found at house 24. Sertić is now the surname Borić women are found marrying into more than any other.
A second child for the Tome Borić and Radotić Marija household at Kamenica house 24. BORIĆ TOME was born 13 September 1899 — after Luce, in 1893 — which makes that household two children deep and reads as a real one beside the Niko Borić household at the same house, not a slip for it.
A problem for a person to settle, not this page. This archive has treated a surname it reads as Kalauj as a distinct family since the first births item (a Kalauj Jure and Vučetić Ove, house 249, 1892). In March 1899 a Kalanj Jure and Vučetić Manole appear at house 231 with the same given names and the same mother's surname, and in this matičar's hand the two spellings cannot be reliably told apart by letterform. A KALANJ NIKO also stands witness to a baptism at Plašćica in September 1899. Nothing has been reclassified: the 1899 entries stay Kalanj because house 231 is Niko Kalanj's. But if the Kalauj family is Kalanj, this register holds more Kalanj entries than this page lists.
And in November 1899 the house-154 Hofjenc household, behind the first Marija Borić this page named, gained a later child. HOFJEVAC IVE was born 12 November at Brinje house 154, son of Hofjevac Niko and Borić Marija, six years after Niko (1893); the husband's name and the house number tie him to that couple, not to the Vid Hofjevac of house 160. A BORIĆ MILKA, a new given name, was a witness.
November 1899 added Mesić, Sertić and a new Kalanj. At Kamenica house 20, MESIĆ PETAR was born 14 November to Mesić Stipo and BORIĆ MARIJA, with another BORIĆ MARIJA as witness — a Borić woman married out into Mesić, at the same time as Mesić women are the wives of three Borić men at Kamenica. At Brinje house 289, SERTIĆ MANOLE was born 29 October to Sertić Pave and BORIĆ LUCE; the BORIĆ MILKA who witnessed it stood witness again two weeks later at the Hofjevac baptism at house 154, both times beside a Hofjevac Niko or a Jelačić Niko — probably one woman, probably a kinswoman of Marija Borić, not asserted. And at Brinje house 188, a second Kalanj household appears: KALANJ MANOLE, born 11 November 1899, daughter of Kalanj Jerko and Krnarić Ruže — a new Kalanj father, at the house that already holds Viol Kalanj's third child, so two Kalanj households now share house 188.
And house 249 sharpens the Kalauj question. KALANJ STIPE was born 18 November 1899 at Brinje house 249, son of Kalanj Mijo and Krnarić Manda — the child of the 15 February 1892 marriage this page already holds, when Mijo, then about 53 and a widower, married a woman of 23. House 249 is also the house where a «Kalauj» Jure and his Vučetić wife were logged in 1892 as a distinct near-miss family. A house that holds a Kalanj bachelor in 1893, a Kalanj baby in 1899 and a «Kalauj» household in between is evidence for reading that household as Kalanj; it is recorded here as evidence, not as a correction, and a person should settle it.
THE WHOLE FILM IS NOW WALKED. Image 489 is the film's own «END OF ITEM» card for the third births item (Matična knjiga rođenih 1897–1900), and the marriage book that follows was read earlier: births 1888–1900 and marriages 1888–1899 at Brinje, every image, from the first to the film's own end cards. The last births read added a third child to the Grgo Borić and Marija Milaković household at house 126 (BORIĆ MANOLE, 30 December 1899) and a Kalanj witness at house 228. Two things remain for a person, not for more walking: whether the near-miss Kalauj family is in fact Kalanj, and a second look at the near-miss witness decisions made at reduced zoom in the last stretch. Until then this register should not be called exhausted for Kalanj.
The deaths volume, read to its end
Read on 6 October 2026: DGS 005498263 (waypoint 9R2D-W32), Brinje's Matična knjiga umrlih 1888–1899, images 9 to 337, every printed page. 48 deaths are on record, 23 Kalanj and 25 Borić, and not one Perković. The volume was read twice: first as whole spreads with every hit opened at readable zoom, then again page by page at readable zoom, both pages of every image. The second reading reproduced all 47 entries of the first and added one the first had missed, so the count is now a page-by-page count and no longer a floor; it cannot rule out a surname misread in an unusual hand, and the near-misses it opened and rejected (Karakaš, Rajković written Rajhonić, Crnković, Benić, Bosnić) are named in the sources log.
What it documents that the births could not. Janja Kalanj, a widow of house 231, died on 4 July 1889: Janja is the mother named on the 1888 marriage of Jure Kalanj, son of Vid and Janja, of house 231, so she is almost certainly his mother. The twin boys of Viol Kalanj and Kate Zoričić (born 22 February 1896, house 188) died on 25 and 26 May 1897, at fifteen months. Ane Kalanj, 17, of house 231 (d. 7 August 1892) is the sister of Marija Kalanj, bride of January 1892, by their parents' names, Joso and Ruže. Mijo Kalanj of house 249 lost a wife, Bare, on 8 October 1891, four months before his second marriage (probable, because that entry gives no house). Children known only from a baptism are shown to have died young: Josip Borić at twenty days, Tome Borić of Kamenica 23 at two years three months, the first Marko Kalanj of house 188 at nine (1894), and the Jure and Marko of the two Vučetić households. Petar Kalanj, 3, died on 18 October 1894 — the one entry the page-by-page reading added: almost certainly the Petar baptised in November 1891 to Tome Kalanj and Mesić Marija of house 188 (the death gives house 181, and the hand drifts by a digit), so that household lost him before the Manole of 1895 and the Franciska of 1898.
The Borić houses, by their dead. House 141 lost four children of Ivan and Matija (Milka 1889, Kate and Vid on 19 and 20 December 1894, Marija on 28 December 1897). Kamenica 24 shows two couples: Tome and Marica (Marija at four in 1891, Luce in 1896, the second Marija at eight in 1899, the name given again each time) and Petar and Ruže (Josip at twenty days in 1891, Kate at nine in 1897). House 126 lost Mare, wife of Juraj, on 20 March 1890, which makes Juko Borić, married that July, a widower of four months if he is that Juraj.
Probable, not proven. Two entries written Galanj, at house 151 (Mile, 74, d. 27 July 1895; Tome, 1½, March 1897), look like the household of the Marko Kalanj of house 151 and of the Mijo and Manole who were the parents of the bride Bare in 1893. A conflict left open. Viktorija, wife of Niko Kalanj of house 188, died on 4 December 1889, yet a Niko Kalanj of house 231 married on 16 February 1890 as a bachelor aged 48; either the status is a clerk's error or these are two men.
The 1909–1910 emigrants, held against the registers. The three births, marriage and deaths volumes can say who could have been the men on the manifests, and who could not. Stipe Kalanj (b. 1885) was born before these books begin, and the only Stipe in them, baptised in November 1899 to Mijo Kalanj and Krnarić Manda of house 249, is far too young. Mile Kalanj (b. 1889, aged 20 in 1909, wife Ana, met by an uncle Jure Božić) has one candidate: the Mile born on 21 October 1888 to Tome Kalanj and his wife Marija at house 188, who does not appear among the deaths to the end of 1899. The age fits to within a year; the uncle's surname fits nothing in the household, and a marriage after 1899 is outside the filmed books, so this is a lead and not a match. The cousin Juro Borić who met Stipe has the same kind of candidate in Juraj Borić, born 3 February 1888 at house 141 to Tome Borić and Jela, alive through the deaths volume and 22 in 1910. Neither candidate is linked to anyone in the tree.
What is not known, and what would answer it
Three things, in the order they would repay opening.
1. Whether Brinje's own households join to each other — checked directly, 30 September 2026, and mostly not. The register has now put three separate Kalanj households at Brinje (houses 231, 249, 118), two separate Perković households (Novi Kut and house 145), and at least nine separate Borić households (houses 126, 141, 142, 191, and five more at Kamenica and Križ Kamenica) on this page. Within a household the register speaks plainly — a confirmed sibling pair at house 126, a confirmed sibling pair at house 141, and a likely father-and-infant-son at house 142 that sharpens rather than resolves a standing puzzle there. Across households, nothing joins them but the surname and the parish. No document has yet named two of these households as kin, and none of the roughly thirty Brinje Kalanj/Perković/Borić individuals found so far has been tied to Josephus Kalanj and Rozalija Perković themselves, or to anyone already in this tree. That may be the true shape of a small parish where three surnames simply run large, or, now that all three of Brinje's filmed 1888–1899 volumes are read, a gap these books cannot close: the Umrli (deaths), read to its end on 6 October 2026, names parents and survivors in one line and still joins no Brinje household to Klenovica or to the tree, so the join, if it exists, lies outside them.
2. A death for Martin Kalanj at Novi Vinodolski or Klenovica in 1900, which would dispose of Trebinje without anyone going to Herzegovina.
3. Which Marija is which in Luka and Kata's household at houses 36 and 37 in 1892 and 1894.
And one thing that is known and is easy to lose sight of. This is the best-recorded family in the archive — 215 people, 87% of the records naming a place, every one of them joined to Hedviga. The hole is not in the evidence. It is forty kilometres inland, in a parish this archive has only just started to read.

Everyone of the name
All 220 people this archive holds of the name, oldest first, in the shape the front page uses — the couple in two columns with a birthplace beside each name, the children beneath them, brothers and sisters under whichever of the two they belong to. Oldest first, which is the only order a family has, and everything is shut until you open it. The rows marked parish register are people read off a page that the family tree has never had; they are not less proved, they are just not typed in.
