Karlobag, Senj and the canons
Tomljanović
The one family on these new pages that reaches the direct line: Lucia (Maja) Tomljanović, ahnentafel 111, died at Karlobag in 1809. Nothing is known of her people beyond her father's name — and the Senj registers hold a good many Tomljanovići who cannot yet be joined to her.
The canons of Senj
The Senj marriage volume, read page by page in October 2026, holds three canons of the name. Pop Pave Tomljanović, a titular canon, celebrates a marriage on 2 October 1739; Perica Tomljanović, a canon, in 1741; and Canon Petar Tomljanović in 1762 and 1764 — see Pave, Perica and Petar. Lay Tomljanovići stand beside them: Klara, daughter of Vule (bride, 18 February 1738), Antonia, daughter of Jule (bride, 14 May 1739), Pero (groom, 1742), Jure (groom, 1751), an Anton named in 1754. The surname is spelt Tomjanovicha, Tommynovich, Tomlyanovich by successive hands, and is old in Senj and its cathedral chapter. None of these has been joined to Lucia; the canons are of the name, not ancestors, and it is their lay relatives who would matter.
Everyone of the name
All 55 people this archive holds of the name,
oldest first, in the shape the front page uses — the couple in two columns with a birthplace
beside each name, the children beneath them, brothers and sisters under whichever of the two
they belong to. Oldest first, which is the only order a family has, and
everything is shut until you open it. The rows marked parish register are people read
off a page that the family tree has never had; they are not less proved, they are just not
typed in.
5 of the 23 married couples here have
no child recorded under them, and 2
are a single parent with no spouse in the tree at all.
That is worth saying rather than
hiding, because it is a fact about the family tree and not about the
family. A couple reaches this archive childless when they were
entered from one index hit and nobody went back for the baptisms — and the
children most often missing are the ones who died small, who are exactly the
children a register does record and an index does not.

(1) Senj marriages (Vjenčani) 1734–1819, 1820–1858 and deaths 1820–1858 (FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P, 592 images), image 18, left-hand page, image 18L, first entry: «Na 18 Februara Ja Plovan Kuhacevich zakupih u sti Matrimoniy Antonia Speranci od Rilke skherom K: Vule Tomjanovicha imenom Klara, Kim bi ja svidoka K. Pave Tomjanovich.» The Senj marriage register 1734–1819 (the Croatian entries of the parish priest Kuhacevich; FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P), image 18 left page, the first entry (the year 1738, begun on 17L). Read in the STRIP PASS; the end of the second line («imenom Klara, Kim») is at the edge of the page and the neighbouring tile of the image had not loaded, so the end of the line is read with a query. Tomljanović is a listed surname: a Tomljanović bride and a Tomljanović witness at Senj in 1738, a century before the Tomljanović deaths of 1834–58 on images 506–585 and the groom of 1853; the register names no link NOTE added at 23R: «K.» before a Tomjanović name is probably «Kanonik» (a canon): on image 23R (2 Oct 1739) a «Kanonik Titular Pop Pave Tomjenovich» is the celebrant, so this Tomljanović family of 1738–39 is a family of Senj priests or nobles, not a town household of the later registers. PAVE TOMLJANOVIĆ [«TOMMYNOVICH»], A WITNESS AT A MARRIAGE AT SENJ IN LATE 1738 — the same man, probably, as the Pave Tomjanović who witnessed the marriage of Klara, daughter of Vule Tomjanović, in February 1738 (image 18L); a reading of the Croatian-language entries.
(1) Senj marriages (Vjenčani) 1734–1819, 1820–1858 and deaths 1820–1858 (FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P, 592 images), image 20, right-hand page, image 20R, third entry: «Na 23 [8]bra Ja Plovan Kuhacevich zakupih u sti Matrimoniy Peru Stabara skherom Pok: Jure Hrehanovicha Gdinom Klarom, Kim bi ja svidoka Gn: Dane Hrehanovich i K. Pave Tommynovich.» The Senj marriage register 1734–1819 (the Croatian entries of the parish priest Kuhacevich; FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P), image 20 right page (page 14 of the book), the third entry. Read in the STRIP PASS (the first pass window missed the right edge of the right page, where the second witness's name finishes: «K. Pave Tommy-/novich»). The month abbreviation is «gbra»/«obra» and is read as October (the entries before it are of 13 and 25 October and those after of 29 and 31 December, so «23 Xbra» is possible: it is the Pave Tomljanović of 18 February 1738 either way). Pave Tomjanović is the witness of the Tomljanović bride of image 18L, in the same year; the register gives no relationship NOTE added at 23R: «K.» before a Tomjanović name is probably «Kanonik» (a canon): on image 23R (2 Oct 1739) a «Kanonik Titular Pop Pave Tomjenovich» is the celebrant, so this Tomljanović family of 1738–39 is a family of Senj priests or nobles, not a town household of the later registers. ANTONIA, DAUGHTER OF JULE TOMLJANOVIĆ [«TOM-YANOVICHA»; THE SURNAME IS READ WITH A QUERY IN A FADED LINE], BRIDE OF A FRANCISKA [..] AT SENJ ON 14 MAY 1739 — a reading of the Croatian-language entries of the Senj marriage register.
(1) Senj marriages (Vjenčani) 1734–1819, 1820–1858 and deaths 1820–1858 (FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P, 592 images), image 22, right-hand page, image 22R, third entry (faded): «Na 14 Maya Ja Plovan Kuhacevich zakupih u sti Matrimoniy Franciska Bexilva? skherom K: Jule Tom-yanovicha imenom Antoniu a to po zapovidi Gna Vikara d'Cholich, Kim bi ja svidoka Ive Borkovich, Jure Melarovich.» The Senj marriage register 1734–1819 (the Croatian entries of the parish priest Kuhacevich; FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P), image 22 right page (page 16 of the book), the third entry. Read in the STRIP PASS at page scale; the line is FADED (the whole entry is lighter than its neighbours and the groom's name is not read with certainty), and the bride's father's surname, broken across two lines, is read as «Tomjanovicha» with a query. If so, a second Tomljanović bride of 1738–39, the daughter of a Jule (Julije?) Tomjanović, after Klara daughter of Vule Tomjanović in February 1738 (image 18L); the two fathers may be one man NOTE added at 23R: «K.» before a Tomjanović name is probably «Kanonik» (a canon): on image 23R (2 Oct 1739) a «Kanonik Titular Pop Pave Tomjenovich» is the celebrant, so this Tomljanović family of 1738–39 is a family of Senj priests or nobles, not a town household of the later registers. POP PAVE TOMLJANOVIĆ [«TOMJENOVICH»], A TITULAR CANON, THE CELEBRANT OF A MARRIAGE AT SENJ ON 2 OCTOBER 1739 BY PERMISSION OF THE PARISH PRIEST — probably the Pave Tomljanović who witnessed two marriages in 1738 (images 18L, 20R); a reading of the Croatian-language entries of the Senj marriage register.
(1) Senj marriages (Vjenčani) 1734–1819, 1820–1858 and deaths 1820–1858 (FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P, 592 images), image 23, right-hand page, image 23R, third entry: «Na 2 [gbra]: Po prispuschenju Plovanskomu Kanonik Titular Pop Pave Tomjenovich zakupi u sti Matrimoniy Franu Parskovicha, Judovom Pok: Mike Bukovca imenom Klaru, Kim bi ja svidoka David Hrehanovich i Anton Baftanci.» The Senj marriage register 1734–1819 (FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P), image 23 right page (page 17 of the book), the third entry. Read in the STRIP PASS at page scale. «Po prispuschenju Plovanskomu» is «with the permission of the parish priest»: the celebrant is a canon, Pop Pave Tomljanović — and so the «K. Pave Tomjanovich» who is the witness of the marriages of 18L (Feb 1738) and 20R (1738) is very probably the same canon («K.» = Kanonik), and the «K. Vule Tomjanovicha» of 18L (the bride Klara's father) is perhaps a canon too, a Tomjanović priest or a noble («K.» standing before his name). The surname is read as Tomjenovich; the first name Pave is read with a query (the line shows «Pop Jure/Pave») (snapshotted; read at about 6x). See notes/senj-marriage-volume-walk.md

PERO TOMLJANOVIĆ [«TOMJANOVICHA»], A GROOM AT SENJ ON 18 JANUARY 1742, THE BROTHER OF THE CELEBRATING PRIEST POP MARKO TOMLJANOVIĆ, marrying Margarita, daughter of the late Tome Dopenović — the Tomljanović of Senj of 1738–42 include three priests (Pave, Perica, Marko); a reading of the Croatian-language entries of the Senj marriage register.
(1) Senj marriages (Vjenčani) 1734–1819, 1820–1858 and deaths 1820–1858 (FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P, 592 images), image 28, right-hand page, image 28R, second entry of 1742: «Na 18 Genvara Pop Marko Tomjanovich dopuschenjam Plovanskim zakupi u sti Matrimoniy svoga brata Pera Tomjanovicha skherom Pok: Tome Dopenovicha imenom Margarita, Kim bi ja svidoka Gdicich Felica d'Vukasovich i Gdicich Perica d'Vukasovich.» The Senj marriage register 1734–1819 (the Croatian entries of the parish priest Kuhacevich; FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P), image 28 right page (page 22 of the book), the second entry from the top, under the year 1742. Read in the STRIP PASS at page scale (the whole line is legible, in a faded page). A priest, Pop Marko Tomljanović, marries «his brother Pero Tomljanović» with the permission of the parish priest — the Tomljanović of Senj of 1738–42 are a family of priests: Pave (a titular canon, 1739), Perica (a canon, 1741), Marko (1742) and their brother Pero. The first Tomljanović marriage of a layman in the volume; compare the Tomljanović deaths of 1834–58 (images 506–585) of a later, town household — the register joins none of them (snapshotted; read at about 6x). POP PERICA TOMLJANOVIĆ [«TOMJANOVICH»], A CANON [«KAN:»], THE CELEBRANT OF A MARRIAGE AT SENJ IN OCTOBER OR NOVEMBER 1741 — one of three Tomljanović priests of Senj in 1739–42 (with Pave and Marko); a reading of the Croatian-language entries of the Senj marriage register.
(1) Senj marriages (Vjenčani) 1734–1819, 1820–1858 and deaths 1820–1858 (FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P, 592 images), image 27, right-hand page, image 27R, entry after 9 October 1741: «Na 18 8bra: Kan: Pop Perica Tomjanovich zakupi u sti Matrimoniy Franu Roxanicha, judovom Pokoy: Elize Celovicha imenom Mandu, Kimbi ja svidoka Bogmestar Gn: Pave Hrehanovich, Gn: Bogmestar Jos Dimeli.» The Senj marriage register 1734–1819 (the Croatian entries of the parish priest Kuhacevich; FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P), image 27 right page (page 21 of the book), the entry after the one of 9 October. Read in the STRIP PASS at page scale; the day and month are read with a query, and the bride's name after «imenom» is «Mandu» (Magdalena). The celebrant, «Kan: Pop Perica Tomjanovich», is a canon and priest of the Tomljanović of Senj of this decade (Pave in 1739, image 23R; Marko and his brother Pero in 1742, image 28R); the register does not say that the three priests are brothers, but names Marko's brother Pero (snapshotted; read at about 6x). JURE TOMLJANOVIĆ [«TOMMYANOVICHA»], A GROOM AT SENJ ON 13 OCTOBER 1751, marrying Mandalena, the widow of the late Anton Fabianić — a Tomljanović layman, of the family that supplied priests to the Senj parish in 1739–42; a reading of the Croatian-language entries of the Senj marriage register.
(1) Senj marriages (Vjenčani) 1734–1819, 1820–1858 and deaths 1820–1858 (FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P, 592 images), image 51, left-hand page, image 51L, second entry of the page: «Na 13 8bra Ja Plovan Kuhacevich zakupih u sti Matrimoniy Jura Tommyanovicha judovom Pok: Antona Fabianicha imenom Mandalenu, Kim bi ja svidoka K. Jure Malagrudichia i Ive Rucich.» The Senj marriage register 1734–1819 (the Croatian entries of the parish priest Kuhacevich; FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P), image 51 left page, the second entry from the top, under the year 1751 (the entry above is of 1 October). Read in the STRIP PASS at page scale; «judovom Pok: Antona Fabianicha» is the widow of the late Anton Fabianić, so the BRIDE is the widow and Jure Tomljanović the groom, and the line is read with a query on who is the widow. The «K.» before the witness's name is a title (Kanonik or Kapitan). A Tomljanović LAYMAN of the Senj marriage volume — the family that supplied three priests in 1739–42 (images 23R, 27R, 28R), and the Pero Tomljanović who married in 1742 (snapshotted; read at about 6x). CANON PETAR TOMLJANOVIĆ [«TOMLYANOVICH»], THE CELEBRANT OF A MARRIAGE AT SENJ ON 24 APRIL 1762 — a Tomljanović priest of the generation after Pave, Perica and Marko (1739–42); a reading of the Croatian-language entries of the Senj marriage register.
(1) Senj marriages (Vjenčani) 1734–1819, 1820–1858 and deaths 1820–1858 (FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P, 592 images), image 69, left-hand page, image 69L, last entry of April 1762: «Na 24. Eň. Canonik T. Petar Tomlyanovich zdruxi u S. Matrimony Gna Maria [?] Osipa Vrinyanin za Udovu Klaru Pasquich. Kon… Svidoki bihu F. Vice Preses Juray Homolich, i Eň: Canciler Juray Danicich.» (Eň = Erdodni? the abbreviation is of «Ervoredni»: Reverend). The Senj marriage register 1734–1819 (FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P), image 69 left page (page 59 of the book), the last entry of April 1762 — the first entry under the heading «Aprilis» is of 19 April; the book from 1761 is a Latin-script Croatian register of the Vicar General Carlo de Wkassovich. Read in the STRIP PASS at page scale: the end of the first line is cut by the edge of the window («Gna …aria Osipa Vrinyanin»: the groom is a Josip Vrinjanin and the bride the widow Klara Pasquich). Pave (1739), Perica (1741) and Marko (1742) Tomljanović were priests of Senj; Petar Tomljanović is a canon in 1762, twenty years later (snapshotted; read at about 6x). CANON PETAR TOMLJANOVIĆ [«TOMLYANOVICH»], THE CELEBRANT OF A MARRIAGE AT SENJ IN SEPTEMBER 1764 — the second marriage he celebrates in the volume (after 24 April 1762); a reading of the Croatian-language entries of the Senj marriage register.
(1) Senj marriages (Vjenčani) 1734–1819, 1820–1858 and deaths 1820–1858 (FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P, 592 images), image 72, right-hand page, image 72R, entry under Septembar: «Ĺn Kanonik T: Petar Tomlyanovich zdruxi u S. Matrimony K. Antona Pasquich za Gna Matta Udovu Lakovich. Kim Svidoki bihu Gn Capitan Wolfango Homolich, i Gn Canciler Juray de Danicich.» The Senj marriage register 1734–1819 (the Croatian entries in Latin script of the canons and the Vicar General Carlo de Wkassovich; FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P), image 72 right page (page 64 of the book), the entry under the heading «Septembar». Read in the STRIP PASS at page scale (the whole line is legible). The second entry in the volume to name Canon Petar Tomljanović as celebrant (24 April 1762, image 69L); a Tomljanović priest of Senj in 1762–64 (snapshotted; read at about 6x). ANTON TOMLJANOVIĆ [«TOMLYENOVICH»], NAMED IN THE FIRST ENTRY OF IMAGE 58 RIGHT, EARLY JANUARY 1754 — his role is not established (bride's father or witness); a reading of the cramped hand of the Senj marriage register.
(1) Senj marriages (Vjenčani) 1734–1819, 1820–1858 and deaths 1820–1858 (FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P, 592 images), image 58, right-hand page, image 58R, first entry: «[Leta 1754 na 6: Jenvara] … zakupi u sti Matrimony Primancer Juraj Homolich [..]marinaricha Anton Tomlyenovichkom, bi svidok [..]ick, Fraron Subatom.» The Senj marriage register 1734–1819 (the cramped hand of the priest Juraj Homolić, 1753–60; FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P), image 58 right page (page 52 of the book), the first entry. Read in the SECOND PASS, at about 2x of the page (a quarter of a page wide per view: the first pass at page scale had not made it out). The role of Anton Tomljanović is not established: the surname is clear and the Christian name «Anton», but the line is the end of an entry that starts on the foot of the left page, and the groom's and bride's names fall in the gutter; he may be the bride's father or a witness. The Tomljanović of Senj are the family of priests of 1739–42 (images 23R, 27R, 28R) and the canon Petar (1762–64, images 69L, 72R) (snapshotted; read at about 6x). GREGORIUS TOMLJANOVIĆ, A SON OF ANTONIUS TOMLJANOVIĆ AND HIS LAWFUL WIFE, DIED AT SENJ IN FEBRUARY 1831 — a row of the Senj death register with the age, disease and burial columns empty.
(1) Senj marriages (Vjenčani) 1734–1819, 1820–1858 and deaths 1820–1858 (FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P, 592 images), image 505, right-hand page, image 505R, first row: «Dies Februarii Anno 1831: Gregorius filius Antonii Tom-janovich et ejus legit. matris conjugis [..] natus ibidem Familiae Parochiae.» The tabular pages of the Senj death register (Matricula Defunctorum 1820–1848, the T section; columns Dies Mortis, Nomen et cognomen Defuncti, Aetas annorum, Morbus, Sacramenta, Locus sepulturae, Sepeliens, N°; FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P), image 505 right page (page 109), read in the SECOND PASS at about 2x of a fifth of the page, the first row under the column headings of the page, at the foot of the heading «Matricula Defunctorum». The row has no entries in the age, disease, sacrament and place columns; it names the child only by his father and mother, so he is an infant or was baptised and died at once. A son of an Antonius Tomljanović of Senj, born and died in the winter of 1830–31 (snapshotted; read at about 6x). See notes/senj-marriage-volume-walk.md

CLARA TOMLJANOVIĆ, A WIDOW [THE FORMER WIFE OF THE LATE LAURENTIUS?, SON OF THOMAS TOMLJANOVIĆ], AGED 60 [BORN ABOUT 1772], DIED OF CONSUMPTION AT SENJ ON 31 MARCH 1832, WITH THE SACRAMENTS, BURIED AT S. PETAR — a row of the Senj death register; the kinship words are read with a query.
(1) Senj marriages (Vjenčani) 1734–1819, 1820–1858 and deaths 1820–1858 (FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P, 592 images), image 505, right-hand page, image 505R, third row of 1832: «1832 31. Martii: Vidua Clara Tomjanovich conjux fuit defuncti Locumis [?] Thoma Tomjanovich, Anno 60, Consumptio, provisa, ad S. Petrum, [Maximilian? Sergalo?] Coop., N° 6.» The tabular pages of the Senj death register (Matricula Defunctorum 1820–1848, the T section; columns Dies Mortis, Nomen et cognomen Defuncti, Aetas annorum, Morbus, Sacramenta, Locus sepulturae, Sepeliens, N°; FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P), image 505 right page (page 109), read in the SECOND PASS at about 2x of a fifth of the page, the third row of 1832 (the previous rows are of 27 February «Matthaeus filius Joannis Thian» and 8 March «Laurentius Domini catholicus filius Thomae Thian»). The kinship words are read with a query: «Vidua Clara Tomjanovich, conjux fuit defuncti [Laurentii?] Thomae Tomjanovich» — a widow of 60 (born about 1772) whose husband, deceased, is named in the genitive, and a Thomas Tomljanović after him (a father-in-law or the husband's father or a second name of the husband). The first pass at page scale had kept this row as a seen row, with the spelling of the surname unsettled; the surname is now read: «Tomjanovich» (snapshotted; read at about 6x).
