A blank house-number column does not mean the household had no number

The tree saysThis archive concluded on 13 September 2026 that “the house number is a village device and it does not reach the town”
The record saysNovi Vinodolski is a town, and its registers do give house numbers — just not to this family, and not on every page

The Senj finding stands as far as Senj goes. But the generalisation drawn from it — that the house number is a village device that does not reach the town — is refuted by four pages of Novi Vinodolski. On str.278 (1894) the column reads 110, 595, —, 313, 647, —, 476, —, —, —, 33, 631; on str.333 (1900) it reads —, 476, 684, 470, —, 223, 629, 103. Towns do record house numbers. On str.293 (1896) and str.314 (1898), by contrast, not one household is numbered at all. So the practice is per register and per priest. Two further things follow. A blank cell is not evidence that a household lacked a number — only that this entry does not record one. And on both pages where numbering happens, Martin Kalanj's household is among the blanks while his neighbours are numbered — which fits a family that came from Klenovica and may never have held a numbered house in Novi. His sister's 1864 baptism, back in the village, is entered Klenovica N° 22 without hesitation. Read it →

“Trebinje” is not evidence, and I treated it as though it were

The tree saysMartin Kalanj, born 8 November 1861 at Klenovica 22; died 5 August 1900 at Trebinje
The record saysThe death has no document behind it at all — its only source is “Geni World Family Tree”, and the place is the bare word “Trebinje” with no country

On 13 September 2026 this archive published his death at Trebinje as an unexplained fact — “a Vinodol man of thirty-eight does not die there by accident… nothing here explains it.” That was too credulous, and the same day's work undermined it.

Look at what the record actually carries. His birth has a full citation — FamilySearch 3QSQ-G99X-KW8J, image 17 of 342, Hrvatski državni arhiv image group 005494765. His death has none: the source is a tree, and the place is one word with no country attached.

And this tree demonstrably moves Lika villages into Bosnia. Michael “Mate” Žubrinić, born 1863 at Prozor near Otočac, is geocoded in this same export to Prozor in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton — two hundred kilometres away and across a border. That is now the fourth geocoding error documented here.

So the honest position is not that Trebinje needs explaining. It is that Trebinje may not need explaining, because it may not be true — and a death register at Novi Vinodolski or Klenovica would settle it faster than any search in Herzegovina. Corrected against the register

The Krivi Put status animarum is family material after all

The tree saysRecorded this morning as “not this family's household — no Pavelić is published here”
The record saysThere are 114 Pavelići in the tree, and Lovro Kalanj married Ana Pavelić

The page is tagged to Krešimir Pavelić, and because no Pavelić is published here — this archive publishes nine surname groups and Pavelić is not one — it was set aside as somebody else's household. That was too quick. The tree holds 114 Pavelići, including a Krešimir Pavelić born 3 March 1898, which matches the household head on the page; and Lovro Kalanj married Ana Pavelić. Unpublished is not the same as unrelated, and conflating the two is a failure mode this archive is structurally prone to. The household stays unattached because no published person is named on it; it is no longer described as unconnected. Read it →

Family

a direct ancestor a record has been read for them an image, not yet read from the family tree, unverified

The mark describes the person, not the link. Of the 17 relatives drawn here, 8 have a document of their own in this archive — but that is not the same as a document tying them to this person. This archive holds no separate proof for most parent–child links; where it does, the note above this chart says so in words.

What the registers say about Martinus / Martin

1893 named-on-a-child-baptism index only — the page has not been opened Novi Vinodolski, baptised 5 August 1893 — INDEX ONLY, «Rozalia Kalanj», father «Martin Kalanj», mother «Maria Peričić»; ark 1:1:XQMQ-QY3Q. The FIFTH child of this household and the one whose scan is NOT in the family's photo library, where the other four sat. The tree gives her birth as 4 July 1893, so the index puts a month between birth and baptism where her siblings' entries put days — unexplained, and a reason to open the page Named on Rozalia Kalanj's entry rather than their own — a register names you is not a register is about you. notes/novi-vinodolski-is-indexed-to-1899.md
1894 named-on-a-child-baptism Novi Vinodolski baptisms str. 278 no. 71 — «Ana, kći zakonita» of «Martin Kalanj Josipov, žena mu Marija rodj. Peričić»; born 5 November 1894, baptised 11 November 1894. The patronymic «Josipov» is the find: it matches the tree's Josip Kalanj independently of the tree. Read at 3x, where the mother's surname reads Peričić and not the Crnić it seemed at page scale Named on Ana Kalanj's entry rather than their own — a register names you is not a register is about you.

1898 named-on-a-child-baptism Novi Vinodolski baptisms — born 4 March 1898, register scan held at 2,953 px. Her godparents are entered «Josip i Ana Defrancesco» — the child's aunt and uncle, which is what proves Ana and Martin Kalanj are sister and brother Named on Zora Kalanj's entry rather than their own — a register names you is not a register is about you.
1900 named-on-a-child-baptism Novi Vinodolski baptisms — born 3 January 1900, register scan held at 2,953 px. The fourth of the four loose sibling scans Named on Ivan Kalanj's entry rather than their own — a register names you is not a register is about you.

Where this sits in the family

Not on the direct line. They are published because they belong to one of the eight surnames this archive follows.

The register spells this surname more than one way, and the search folds the forms together — so Xubrinich and Žubrinić, Joannis and Ivan, find each other.
