Anica / Ana / Anna "Ana" Kalanj
1864–1936 · Klenovica 22, Klenovica, Croatia
Her gravestone gives the wrong birth date
| The tree says | Born 3 January 1864, Klenovica 22; died 28 May 1936, Crikvenica |
|---|---|
| The record says | The Crikvenica stone reads ✻ 19 IX 1863 — the baptismal register reads 3 January 1864 |
The grave at Crikvenica is inscribed <em>ANA DE. FRANCESCHI ✻ 19 IX 1863 ✝ 28 V 1936</em>. The death is exactly right. The birth is not. Her baptism survives: <em>Anno Domini 1864</em>, no. 2 — <em>Anna, legitima, Josephus Kalanj et Rosalia nata Perković ejus uxor, Brinjensis parochiae ruricolae</em>, at <span class='mono'>Klenovica N° 22</span>, born <strong>3 January 1864</strong> and baptised three days later on 6 January. A register written within the week beats a stone cut after 1936, so the tree's date stands and the stone is the error. Worth saying plainly because the stone is the kind of source that feels conclusive and is not. Read it →
She is Martin Kalanj's sister, which explains the godparents
| The tree says | Ana Kalanj and Martin Kalanj both children of Josip Kalanj and Rozalija Perković, Klenovica 22 |
|---|---|
| The record says | Both baptisms name the same parents; and Ana's husband stands godfather to Martin's daughter |
Ana's 1864 baptism gives her parents as Josephus Kalanj and Rosalia nata Perković at Klenovica 22 — the same couple the tree gives Martin (b. 8 November 1861, Klenovica 22). They are brother and sister. The confirmation arrives from an unexpected direction: at Zora Kalanj's baptism in 1898, Martin's daughter, the godparents are entered as <em>Josip i Ana Defrancesco</em> — that is Ana herself and her husband, the child's aunt and uncle. Four register pages, found loose in a photo library, turn out to document one household across two generations. Read it →
Her family is from Brinje, not Klenovica — and her own baptism says so
| The tree says | This archive has treated the Kalanji as a Klenovica family throughout — 119 of them are recorded there |
|---|---|
| The record says | Her 1864 baptism enters her parents as <em>Brinjensis parochiae ruricolae</em> — country people of the parish of Brinje |
The line was read, transcribed and then not acted on. <strong>Brinje is inland, over the Kapela, some forty kilometres from Klenovica</strong>, and the tree independently records her mother <strong>Rozalija Perković</strong> as being of Brinje. So the Klenovica Kalanji came down to the coast from somewhere else, and every search this archive has run has been on the coast. What forced the re-reading was an American passenger manifest: <strong>Stipe Kalanj</strong> sailed for New York in 1910 giving his residence as <strong>Brinje</strong>, and was met by a cousin <strong>Juro Borić</strong> — and this tree holds a <strong>Jure Borić of Brinje</strong> whose daughter married a <strong>Papić of Senj</strong>. Kalanj, Perković and Borić all sit at Brinje. <strong>Not one page of the Brinje register has ever been opened</strong>, and Brinje appears nowhere in this archive's gazetteer. Read it →

Family
The mark describes the person, not the link. Of the 11 relatives drawn here, 2 have a document of their own in this archive — but that is not the same as a document tying them to this person. This archive holds no separate proof for most parent–child links; where it does, the note above this chart says so in words. 10 relatives are named in the tree but fall outside the eight surnames and have no page.

Where this sits in the family
Not on the direct line. They are published because they belong to one of the eight surnames this archive follows.
The register spells this surname more than one way, and the search folds the forms together — so Xubrinich and Žubrinić, Joannis and Ivan, find each other.

Documents and photographs
3 documents and 0 photographs in the MyHeritage media library carry this person's tag. None of them travelled in the GEDCOM. All of them →
A tag says somebody linked this image to this person — not that the person is in it. A register page is tagged to everyone it names. Method →
Sources attached in the tree
None. This person carries no source string at all in the tree. They may still be right — but nothing here can be checked without going to the register. Method →
An online family tree is a witness, not a source. Where a citation points at a parish register or a FamilySearch image, that is the thing worth going to. Sources →
