Sv. Jelena, Krmpote and Senj
Špalj
Sixteen people born 1871 to 1894, four households — and in every one the wife is a Prpić. Beneath them, seven readings from the Senj registers going back to a lieutenant of Krmpote in 1747.
Four households, four Prpić wives
The tree holds sixteen Špalji, and they fall into four households, each with the same shape. Daniel Špalj married Francesca Prpić and had Margaritte (1871, born at Krmpote 152), Stanislava (1873) and Mathea (1875, both at Senj). Josip “Joso” Špalj married Ana Prpić and had Kate (1886), Marija Pepica (1888), Jure Milkan (1891) and Lucija (14 January 1894, at Sv. Jelena, who married Ivan Belobarbić). Franjo Špalj married Marta Prpić and had Ana (1887) and Martin (1893, at Sv. Jelena, Krivi Put 130). Mate Špalj married Matija Prpić and had Mile (1888, Sv. Jelena Br 152) and Klara (1893). Separately Lucia Špalj is the wife of Josip Prpić. That is five Prpić marriages with a Špalj in the tree.
Two things are worth saying plainly. The tree does not name the four men's parents, so whether they were brothers is not known. And the Krmpote and Sv. Jelena places both carry the number 152 — Margaritte in 1871 and Mile in 1888, in two different households — which is either one house, or one number written twice; the parish register would say.
Everyone of the name
All 8 people this archive holds of the name,
oldest first, in the shape the front page uses — the couple in two columns with a birthplace
beside each name, the children beneath them, brothers and sisters under whichever of the two
they belong to. Oldest first, which is the only order a family has, and
everything is shut until you open it. The rows marked parish register are people read
off a page that the family tree has never had; they are not less proved, they are just not
typed in.

(1) Senj marriages (Vjenčani) 1734–1819, 1820–1858 and deaths 1820–1858 (FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P, 592 images), image 490, right-hand page, S section, page 95, second dated line of 1820: «[?] Martii [1820] obiit Joannes Vidua? Spal. S. provisus annorum circiter — [80]». One of the abbreviated one-line death entries of 1820 (the first page of the S section, page 95 of the Senj death register, Protocollum mortuorum 1820–1848): date, «obiit», the name, the sacraments, the age; the age in the right margin reads «80». Read at full page scale (about 1x); the first word after the name is not firm («Vidua» would make the name a woman's, but the register gives no surname to a widow in this period only in the form «Vidua» before the name). Špalj is a listed surname; the spelling here is «Spal» (snapshotted; read at about 6x). See notes/senj-marriage-volume-walk.md

(1) Senj marriages (Vjenčani) 1734–1819, 1820–1858 and deaths 1820–1858 (FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P, 592 images), image 195, left-hand page, image 195L, entry 23 of January 1814: «23. Carolus Vranich Coop. loci conjunxit in Matrimonium [praemissis tribus] denuntiationibus Thomam Ofarich [Starich?] et Mariam Spalj, testibus Blasio Ofarich et Carolo Helpho[..].» The Senj marriage register 1734–1819 (the Latin numbered entries of the cooperator Carolus Vranich, 1813–14; FamilySearch waypoint 9RK1-W3P), image 195 left page, the last-but-one entry of the page. Read in the SECOND PASS at about 2x of the lower part of the left page (the first pass at 0.75 had not made the surname out). A Maria ŠPALJ, a bride at Senj in January 1814 — the Špalj entries of the volume were the Lieutenant Matia Špalj of Krmpote (1747, image 42R), this bride (1814), the Špalj bride of 1820 and the Spal/Spalj deaths of 1820–36. Whether the second name is Starić or Čarić (or another) is not read with certainty; the Špalj bride is (snapshotted; read at about 6x). See notes/senj-marriage-volume-walk.md
