Šestan
Fifty-five people whose entire connection to this family, when tested, runs through a single node the tree itself labels “not real”. They are kept, and every one of them is marked.
Every route to them passes through a label
The shortest path from Hedviga to the nearest Šestan is eleven steps: out through Ivan Defranceski to his father Ante, to Josip de Franceschi, to Antonius, to Giovanni Battista, to Teresa Grach, to an unnamed spouse — and then across this:
Grah's for Investigation (not real)a node in the family tree, standing where a father should be
— and on to Gologorica Grah, to Josephus Grah, to Rosa Šestan.
Remove that one node and there is no path at all. Every one of the fifty-five becomes unreachable. They are published here because somebody was investigating whether they belonged, and the investigation is still sitting in the tree in the place where a father should be. Labels where the father should be →
They are not where this site said they were
Šestan was described here as «of the Croatian Littoral». Twenty-three of the twenty-four placed Šestani are at Gologorica, in central Istria — a different peninsula, eighty miles west of Senj, and nowhere near the Velebit littoral where every other family on this site lives. The remaining record is on Pag.
And not one Šestan marries into any of the other eight families. Their marriages go to Defranceschi — three of them — and then to Depras, Androšić, Krišmanić and Gašparić. Defranceschi is Hedviga's husband's family, not hers. So the geography and the marriages say the same thing the path says.
What this archive is doing about it
Keeping them, and marking every one. The method here is to report the tree rather than edit it, and these are real records of real people at Gologorica between 1780 and 1947 — the doubt is about the join, not about them. Deleting fifty-five people to make a statistic look better would be the opposite of what this archive is for.
So all fifty-five carry a notice at the head of their own page saying that every route from Hedviga to them passes through a sorting label. A reader should not meet these names on a site about a woman from Senj without being told what connects them to her — and equally should not be told they are fictitious, because nothing here suggests that. The measurement →
What is not known, and what would answer it
1. Who Teresa Grach married. One name in one marriage entry would either replace the label with a man or prove there is nothing behind it. That single document decides whether fifty-five people belong on this site.
2. The Gologorica registers. Never opened. Istrian parishes are not in this archive's reading plan at all, because until the path was measured nobody knew the family was there.
3. The Pag record. One Šestan, off on an island, joined to the other twenty-three by a surname.
Where they were born
- 23 Gologorica, Istra, Croatia
How the tree spells it
- Sestan × 55
Everyone of the name
All 55 people this archive holds of the name, oldest first, in the shape the front page uses — the couple in two columns with a birthplace beside each name, the children beneath them, brothers and sisters under whichever of the two they belong to. Oldest first, which is the only order a family has, and everything is shut until you open it. The rows marked parish register are people read off a page that the family tree has never had; they are not less proved, they are just not typed in.
